Supernatural Seasons 1-8
This is what I was talking about yesterday: Barry Letts on Peter Capaldi and Jon Pertwee. Enjoy!
(Sorry for the quality, I’m not really good at these things, but you can hear it anyway, can’t you? :) Background noises brought to you by Part 5 of ‘The Monster of Peladon’.)
People saying that Peter Capaldi is ‘too old’ and ‘not sexy’ are either mad or blind. Or both. I mean, look at him! If he’s not sexy, then who? I met him once and it was rather a tough task talking to someone who was just standing there looking at you and listening to your blabbering with such a mischievous look on his face and yet with such kind and attentive eyes. I might be getting old, I know, 27 in a few days, but I know quite a few ladies of different age who find Peter one of the most attractive people ever.
There’s definitely one good thing about him being 55 - no more romantic nonsense between the Doctor and Clara. I’m fed up with it and I want the Doctor to be what he used to be to his companions: a father, an older brother, an uncle. If you say that actors playing the part shouldn’t be old, then go and do your homework. Those playing the Doctor in 60s - 80s weren’t youngsters at all and nobody complained. In fact, when Peter Davison took over, it casued some controversy because he was the first actor under 30 to play the part. But he was the best friend and a caring brother in the eyes of Tegan, Nyssa, Adric, Turlogh and Peri. So there. I’m glad we have someone who can bring that back.
‘He’s been in Doctor Who and Torchwood before.’ So what? D you want to tell me it’s the first time? No. Then please shut up and enjoy the show. We have someone really good and special taking over from Matt Smith and I’m sure we’re in for a treat.
P.S. Oh, and please, do learn how to spell ‘twelfth’.
Matt Smith had to shave his head for How To Catch A Monster
Karen Gillan had to shave her head for Guardians of the Galaxy
Someone hide David Tennant
Martin Freeman: he’s a huggy bear.
As Donnie Darko said, THEY (@BryanFuller, @eddieizzard, @KaceyKadoodles et @NBCHannibal overall, just look at all these gorgeous people, aghh, this project is so lovely it hurts) MADE ME DO IT.
Also: Kacey Rohl looks SO like Clarice Starling to me, that I just… can’t.
Also: the butterfly is Acherontia atropos, like in the movie, not Erebus odora, like in the book… but I guess those who are still wondering where the Hell did I get my user name finally have a clue xD
Also: don’t get me started on Eddie Izzard theme. That’s worse than Titus Welliver and definitely as bad as Clark Gregg. Fatal strike for me. Gonna paint him more than I suspected, apologies in advance…
Also: music helped, A LOT, as usual.

So… I guess I’m finishing this week’s mad pills-insomnia-painting marathon under the flags of NBC’s “Hannibal”. Not sure when I’ll return to the theme - may be sooner, may be later - but I will. This show deserves art, and I hope I can give it some adequate art feedback.
I feel like I need to explain a thing or two about the composition (don’t ask me to explain the magic circle, that just felt good as a reference to the concept of medieval approach to knowledge in general). See, the quote that belongs to Dr Lecter can be also regarded as the description of all these people. THEY KNOW. Both Dr Du Maurier and Dr Gideon are not only very close to knowing Dr Lecter’s ‘darker side’; they are, in fact, his teachers. Both of them. Not only in psychiatric sense: if you’re familiar with the canon, you can notice that Hannibal Lecter in his prison years basically uses the same tricks as Abel Gideon. That’s why I wanted to paint them in the same frame.
As for the faces… Eddie Izzard is quite a fun to paint, because at some point his face sort of… I might say, ‘starts painting itself’. You don’t look at references, he just appears there beneath your pen movements. Quite fascinating, that is. Then, I’ve had a considerable amount of time to practice painting Gillian Anderson in my school days, being a huge ‘The X Files’ geek, so that one was easy, too. As for Mads Mikkelsen… not an easy one. I started with something so damn mongoloid that it’s surprising he looks like himself. Anyway, each and every of them has the features that are enjoyable for a painter.
And… the music. As usual. In fact, it was the line by The Servant, “They could destroy me, they should enjoy me”, that made me open a new file and start sketching. Just to make the whole thing worse: I started with Dr Gideon, so… add the background tune here ;3
